This weekend Newcastle city centre will be taken over by police dogs, a marine boat and firearms officers as part of a Northumbria Police engagement day.

On Sunday (July 16) Northumbria Police will descend on the Monument as it looks to raise awareness about Hate Crime ahead of Northern Pride the following weekend.

Between 12 noon and 3pm officers will be available to speak to members of the public about their local police force.

There will also be an opportunity to meet the police pups, explore the Marine Unit's boat and feel their way around a police arrest van.

City centre Inspector, Steve Wykes, said it will be an opportunity for officers to promote messages around hate crime and give the public a chance to find out about a career in the police.

He said: "This will be a fantastic opportunity for us to get to know our local communities and give visitors to Newcastle a chance to have a chat about local issues.

"Most people will only have to deal with police if they are unfortunate enough to be a victim of crime and we wanted to show people what we are about.

"With Northern Pride coming to the city next week this is also an opportunity to raise awareness about Hate Crime and remind people that nobody should be targeted for who they are.

"It will also give people the chance to speak to us about a career at the police whether that be with our police cadets, as a police officer or as one of our Northumbria volunteers.

"We want to break down barriers with the public and particularly show younger members of the public that the police are approachable.

"They will have the chance to try on a police uniform, explore our Marine Unit's boat and to have a cuddle with one of our police dogs."

A host of different teams from Northumbria Police will be present at the Monument on Sunday. They include:

- Police Cadets
- Mini Police
- Marine Unit
- Northumbria Police LGBT association
- Community Engagement Team
- Firearms Support Unit
- Vicitms First Northumbria
- Dog Section
- Human Resources
- Force Chaplain
- City Centre neighbourhood policing team
