Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated  14th June 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

We would like to know the number of road traffic accidents in which a mobile phone has been noted as playing a contributing role in the incident.
Please provide details on an annual basis for the last three years available data.

In your response please include:

1. The total number of road accidents for each year.

2. The total number of mobile phone related accidents for each year.

Where possible for each mobile phone related accident please include:

a) The date of each accident
b) Location of accident, including road classification
c) A brief description of the incident, including how many / type of vehicles involved
d) Information on the mobile phone’s contributing role in the incident (I.e was driver phoning, texting at time, etc)
e) Injuries sustained due to the accident
f) Charges brought in relation to the accident

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with both the Collision Records and Operations Departments of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held, in part, by Northumbria Police and I provide a response for your attention.

1. Collisions can occur where officers have not attended.  There will be instances where details are simply exchanged between the parties.  The figures given below therefore are figures for RTCs reported to us.

 2011 = 7,920
 2010 = 8,560
 2009 = 9,186

2. No information held.  We do not hold any statistical data that would provide an answer to this part of your request.
