Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 20 November  2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

1. Has your constabulary shared the contact details of any people involved in road traffic accidents with third parties (e.g. claims management companies/personal injury lawyers) in the last 3 years?  Please provide the information by year i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012

2. If so, how many of these peoples’ contact details were passed over to these third parties during this period? Again, can you please breakdown the information by year i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012

3. How much money did your constabulary receive from these third parties for this information? Please breakdown the information by year i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012

4. Have any police officers in your constabulary been accused of allegations of selling on personal information to third parties (e.g. claims management companies/personal injury lawyers) in the last 3 years? If so please provide the information by year i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012.  How many of the allegations were upheld?

5.  Have any police officers had disciplinary action taken against them for selling the personal details of road accident victims to third parties (e.g. claims management companies/personal injury lawyers) in the last 3 years? Please provide the information by year i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012. How many of the allegations were upheld?

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Professional Standards and Finance and Resources Departments of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held, in part, by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. This police force does not, and has not in the past, shared information of people involved in road traffic accidents with claims management companies or personal injury lawyers.

  2. N/A - as the response to 1 above is negative.

  3. N/A - as the response to both 1 and 2 above is negative.

  4. There have been no officers accused of selling personal information. 

  5. N/A - as the response to 4 above is negative.
