Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 17 April 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

I would like to request information with regards to retired police officers that have been subsequently hired into civilian posts. Can you firstly confirm:?

  1. How many civilian posts are there in your authority and how many people are employed that are retired police officers?

  2. How many former police officers are claiming both a pension and a staff salary?

  3. Can I have a breakdown of what jobs the retired policemen do and their respective staff salaries?

  4. How many retired police officers are not current permanent members of staff but are employed as consultants or temporary staff?

  5. What is the total annual amount paid out in salaries to retired police officers, excluding pensions?

  6. What is the most any retired police officer is earning from his staff salary?

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Finance and HR Departments of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held, in part, by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. As of 19 April 2012 there were 96 people employed that are retired police officers.

    There are 1912.69 full time equivalent members of police staff, inclusive of Community Support Officers (CSOs).

  2. 96.

  4. There are no temporary members of staff.  No information is held regarding those employed as consultants as we could only identify those that were paid directly through our payroll system and not those employed by companies whose services we may have used.
