Mosques and Synagogues - 685/16
Dated: 05 Jul 2016
Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
Thank you for your e mail dated 10 June 2016 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
1. How many attacks or attempted attacks (including arson, vandalism or threats to attack online, over the phone or in person) on mosques and synagogues in the police force's jurisdiction have been recorded between, 2010 and 2016.
2. How many attackers have been identified and arrested over the same time period for the above attacks on mosques and synagogues.
Ideally it would be broken by year and divided between attacks on mosques and synagogues.
I do not need to know which mosques and synagogues were targeted or where they are. I do not need to know the names or any details of the people accused of attacking them.
Could I also be told which month the data goes up to in 2016 (if figures aren't available up to 2015 is fine).
On 13/06/16 you clarified:
I meant the total number of attacks which are both successful and unsuccessful but still reported to the police so I would presume the number of recorded crimes for the time period specified.
Could I also have the figures for criminal damage to mosques and synagogues as well
By threats to attack online I would say threats to blow it etc you would see sent over email or via social media. Anything that would theoretically be prosecuted under the malicious communications act.
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police
I am able to disclose the located information to you as below attached.
The information provided is up to 28 June 2016 and is based on the number of crimes for the following type of offences, arson, criminal damage and any that involved a direct threat towards a Mosque or Synagogue. As such a number of other offences for example burglary, public disorder or violence against the person have not been included.
Please note that the number of arrests is based on the crimes in question 1 and there may be crimes where multiple persons have been arrested.
Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another. Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.
The information we have supplied to you is likely to contain intellectual property rights of Northumbria Police. Your use of the information must be strictly in accordance with the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) or such other applicable legislation. In particular, you must not re-use this information for any commercial purpose.
