Illegal immigration - 631-15
Dated: 04 Jul 2016
Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
Thank you for your e mail dated 6 July 2015 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
Your force will make a number of detentions on immigration grounds. Detainees are usually handed over to the Home Office's Immigration Enforcement teams.
Please tell me:
(1.) How many people were detained by your force since the start of 2013, until the most recent data available - ideally June 2015. Please provide the data on a month-by-month basis.
(2.) When providing answers to question (1) please include overall figures for those detained on suspicion of committing immigration offences but if you are able to break down the reason for the arrest into more detail (eg the person was detained on suspicion of entering the UK illegally) please do so.
Ideally the format of the data I am seeking would be:
April 2015: Number of detainees held (a) on suspicion of entering the UK illegally X,XXX; (b) for other reasons X,XXX.
May 2015: Number of detainees held (a) on suspicion of entering the UK illegally X,XXX; (b) for other reasons X,XXX.
June 2015: Number of detainees held (a) on suspicion of entering the UK illegally X,XXX; (b) for other reasons X,XXX.
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.
I am able to disclose the located information to you in part as follows in response to point 1.
Point 2 would have exceeded the permitted time limits and S12 of the Act would have been applicable. We have therefore discounted this part of your request as per your instructions above.
Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another. Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.
