Crimes - 1350/16

Dated: 10 Jan 2017

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

Thank you for your e mail dated 5 December 2016 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

Please could you give me figures of how many sexual offences crimes were recorded where the suspects were under 16 in the past five years

-with a yearly breakdown

-breakdown of 0-10yrs old (with youngest age named), 11-12yrs, 13-15yrs

-breakdown for sexting, sexual assault, rape

-breakdown of male and female

-how many charges were brought, and of these how many led to convictions?

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

As advised, FOIs 1350/16 & 1351/16 will be aggregated due to cost/time consideration of the Act.  This will also apply should further similar requests be submitted within 60 days hence.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

This response is a count of all suspects that have been accused or eliminated and are Under 16, including multiple offenders for the same crime.

The age of the person was calculated at the Date committed (from) rather than the Date committed (to)as it is often given as a range of dates where the exact date of the crime was not known/recorded.

As there is no specific Home office code for sexting, they are included within 'Sexual offences'.

Ages of suspects in historical crimes may not be accurate.

As some investigations will be ongoing some offenders may not have charges brought against them yet.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.

With the above in mind please see the below attached.

We are not able to provide any conviction information, we can only give figures on the number of crimes (not offenders) where charges have been brought.

Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another.  Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data.  For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.

The information we have supplied to you is likely to contain intellectual property rights of Northumbria Police.  Your use of the information must be strictly in accordance with the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) or such other applicable legislation.  In particular, you must not re-use this information for any commercial purpose.
